Organize customers with sub-customers
A customer can sit under another customer as a sub-customer, handy when one account has several sites, properties, or jobs you bill separately. For example, a property manager Acme might have sub-customers Downtown and Uptown. Alpha shows the full path (Acme › Downtown) wherever the customer appears.
Add a sub-customer
- Open the parent customer and click Add sub-customer in the Sub-customers panel. The new customer starts out nested under it. (You can also set a parent on the customer's edit form, or when creating a customer from scratch.)
- To move a customer, open it, click Edit, and choose a different parent, or clear the parent to make it top-level. The picker only offers valid parents, so you can't accidentally nest a customer under one of its own sub-customers.
Importing from QuickBooks
QuickBooks sub-customers come in as sub-customers in Alpha automatically, and the parent and child relationships are preserved. Renaming a parent in QuickBooks updates the name everywhere it appears in Alpha; nothing on your end to keep in sync.
A project always bills the exact customer you pick: the sub-customer, not its parent. When you choose a customer on a project, Alpha shows the billing target (Bills to Acme › Downtown) so you can confirm you've landed on the right one. Pick the specific sub-customer the work is for.
